An initiative by PM Narendra Modi in 2014 led to the world celebrating International Yoga Day on 21 June every year. Currently in its third year, International Yoga Day will be celebrated by many nations, in their own unique ways.
The theme this year is ‘Yoga for health’. This theme wishes to highlight the many benefits of yoga that affect our mental and physical well-being. Yoga is a science that dates back to as many as 5,000 years and all the practices involved help create a proper balance between body and mind.
Here is how the world over, atleast 175 countries to be exact, will be celebrating this ancient science in their own way:
India: In India, Mysuru will be attempting a Guinness record for the largest number of people participating in a yoga class. Since Mysuru is considered to be the yoga capital of India, this record aims to celebrate International Yoga Day in the perfect manner. The capital, on the other hand, is aiming to bring together 50,000 yogis to break its previous year’s record.
USA: Since the biggest gathering will be held at Times Square, many will be heading towards the same on International Yoga Day. Registration for the same have already started and the collection of the event will go to charity. Other than New York, many local places are holding classes to honour the same across the country.
UN: The United Nations headquarters will be lit up with the word Yoga, images of which have already been doing rounds on social media. It was in 2014, that the United Nations declared 21 June as International Yoga Day and this is the second year the headquarters will be celebrating the same in New York.
Canada: Canada will be marking International Yoga Day by organising events that will have a wide range of activities. These will include slow flow, aromatherapy yoga and freedom flow. New forms of yoga will be practiced along with the ancient forms of practice.
France: An event commemorating International Yoga Day was held in front of Eiffel tower in France recently. The participants were dressed in white tshirts. There are various events that are being held on International Yoga Day across the country to celebrate the day.
Japan: Since the popularity of yoga has increased in Japan over the past few years, this time the celebrations have begun well in advance. According to a report by PTI, Japan is the only country to set up a parliamentary league for the promotion of Yoga. This was launched in April 2017 in the presence of spiritual guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
