If Rapunzel was a real-life character, I am sure she would be the richest woman in the world because of a whole battery of hair product endorsements that she would be flooded with – shampoos, hair oils, hair color – the works. After all, nothing sells like hair and beauty products. And the reason for it is obvious: All of us at some point or other face problems with our hair – like hair loss, graying of hair, greasy or dull hair, split ends or frizziness. Thick, voluminous, and lustrous split-end free hair has always been on my wish list! Many times, over and over again I would secretly wish and dream that my dull, limp and lustreless hair would magically turn into a gorgeous, thick mane when I would wake up. The truth, of course, was something else. More than half of my paycheck was spent in the salon trying to revive my sullen locks.
Hair fall is one of the commonest hair problems faced today; split-ends and dryness come a close second. To rescue you from hair fall or dull and lifeless hair I’ve listed below some extremely beneficial home remedies that have helped me arrest hair fall and bring back some life and shine to my hair.
Old-fashioned Hot Oil treatment works best!
Warm a little oil – any natural oil (olive, canola, coconut or castor) in a small bowl and gently massage it into your scalp. Leave it on for a few hours and then shampoo it off. Nothing works better than massaging some oil into your scalp. This circulatory motion helps increase the oxygen and nutrient supply to your scalp and arrests hair fall.
S for Shine, Salmon and Sweet Potatoes!
Fish like salmons, sardines, and mackerels are packed with omega-3 fatty acids which help your hair to be shiny and thick. Omega-3 fatty acids are not naturally produced in our body so we have to rely on dietary sources. Sweet potatoes are rich in an antioxidant called beta-carotene which helps protect against dry, dull hair. It also encourages the glands in your scalp to produce an oily fluid called sebum that prevents hair from drying out. Other orange colored vegetables like carrots, pumpkin, cantaloupes, and Mangoes are also rich in beta-carotene.
Battle Brittle hair with Spinach and Citrus Fruits
In your battle against brittle hair, what leads the army is Spinach! Like so many dark green leafy vegetables, spinach is full of amazing nutrients. It has tons of vitamin A, iron, beta carotene, folate and vitamin C. All these nutrients keep your scalp and hair moisturized and prevents breakage. Vitamin C-rich citrus fruits and veggies like lemon, orange, sweet lime and guava help build collagen which is highly important for hair growth. It also helps strengthen hair by assisting iron absorption in our body.
What you need for fullness is Zinc. When you don’t have enough of this mineral in your diet, you can have hair loss – even in your eyelashes! Cells that build hair rely on zinc to help them work efficiently and well. Foods which are known to have high zinc content are oysters, beef, crab, lobster, nuts, pumpkin seeds and fortified cereal. Another essential nutrient requirement for thickness is proteins. When your diet does not have enough proteins, hair growth slows down. To have thick voluminous hair you need to have protein-rich food like eggs, sprouts, dairy products, fish, and chicken. Though simple these tips are extremely effective and what’s even better is that all of these things are straight out of my kitchen! Not only do my locks look lovely now, all the right nutrition is making my skin glow too!
