Do You Know Talcum Powder Can Invite Ovarian Cancer?

Talcum Powder

When you’re buying products for self-care or personal hygiene, you would clearly want what’s best for your well-being. So, what could be reliable than talcum powder designated for babies? Barely a thing you’d think, but it turns out that talcum powder may act as a health risk to women. We recently heard about this unexpected fact thanks to a case registered against Johnson & Johnson by women suffering from ovarian cancer. But is there any certainty to these charges or are the actions just a plan to make a quick money?

The Talcum Powder Cancer Connection

Johnson & Johnson denied all of the charges, but it lost the first prosecution in February 2016 and the next in May, having been directed to pay a total of USD 127 million. As it rolls out, the company has also been in the limelight for selling baby shampoos with known carcinogens, so this appears as no shock. Sadly, most of us persist blissfully unconcerned about these trials and Johnson & Johnson’s remains one of the most esteemed brands here. When we look at the logical proof to find a connection between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer, there is no consent, but various studies do mark towards a cancer hazard. However, it is worth remarking that the conclusions were strong enough to give the company a slap in court. According to some specialists, talc could be a hazardous factor for cancer as it is probably conceivable for it to travel through the vagina to the ovaries, creating inflammation – ovarian soreness is known to raise the risk of cancer.

The Big Cover-up

Big Cover-up

While the reach of talcum powder as cancer provoking agent is nowhere near that of tobacco, the cover-up smells with the same corporate stench. Talcum powder or baby powder has long been vended as women too, as an individual hygiene merchandise to regulate the body smell and moisture, particularly in the privates. More surprising than the chance that baby powder can cause ovarian cancer in women is the announcement that Johnson & Johnson was privy to this information for decades and yet they kept vending the product for women! Yes, a company memorandum issued privately in 1992 declares clearly in point number 2 – “Negative publicity from the health community on talc (inhalation, dust, negative doctor endorsement, cancer linkage) continues.”

When watching at the hazards of talcum powder it should also be aimed out the product has often been bound with asbestos, a known carcinogen. Researchers even discovered talcum in some of the ovarian tumors that they operated back in the 1970s. While asbestos may now be a forbidden component, product security still remains controversial. In case you have been applying talcum powder, don’t panic just yet. As we mentioned, the proof is not final, but consumers have a right to information so that you can make better-informed judgments. Besides, if you knew that there was a chance of cancer (conclusive or not) from a selective product, you should consider twice before applying it.
